Churches and Monasteries

The Baroque era has given Slovenia eternal character. The most important church monuments in the Land of Celje are the church with the underground sanctuary on Gora Oljka, the sunny-coloured church on Sladka Gora and the Calvary and Church of St. Rok (Šmarje pri Jelšah).

Churches in the Land of Celje invite you to do some exploring, as they keep much more inside than just a rich legacy of the Baroque era. Curious explorers will be rewarded with the Virgin Mary pilgrim image, archives about the impact of mineral water on long life (Rogaška Slatina), exceptional acoustics (Rogatec), a precious Mary statue from the first half of the 14th century (Šempeter), the outstanding gothic Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows (Celje), a baptistery designed by architect Jože Plečnik (Tabor) and a cross relic in crystal (Ponikva).

The Land of Celje has two charterhouses in remote valleys. Enjoy some peace and quiet in the shelter of the Žička Charterhouse. Gastuž, the oldest restaurant in Central Europe, is part of the charterhouse. The Jurklošter Charterhouse stirs up visitors’ imagination with well-preserved remnants of hidden tunnels and the tragic love story of Veronika Deseniška and Friderik II who found their shelter behind its walls. Hospitable Minorites in Olimje, who like taking good care of pilgrims and tourists, preserve the tradition of herbalism in an old monastic pharmacy.
